Abstract:

This dataset shows the lines separating the five wehi of Pohnpei. Wehi are Pohnpei's traditional kingdoms. Wehi correspond to modern municipalities. The only exception is Kolonia, which is not a wehi but became a municipality in 1965 when it was separated from Nett. The original data, so-called Digital Line Graphs (DLSs), were created by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the 1:25,000-scale topographic maps (2001). It was modified by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi) (2017) to fit the most recent base layer and to reflect standard spellings according to municipal constitutions and Pohnpeian orthography. Note that boundaries shown in this map are not definite. This map does not constitute any sort of recommendation, claim, or endorsement.

Purpose: To show the wehi of Pohnpei.

The dataset is included the Digital Atlas of Micronesia, module Pohnpei, by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi), in collaboration with Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) University of Guam and partial funding from United States Geological Survey (USGS), under WRRI 104-B Program, project # 2016GU302B.

Attribute accuracy is tested by manual comparison of the source with hard copy plots and/or symbolized display of the digital line graph on an interactive computer graphic system. Through inspection and queries, attempts were made to ensure completeness and consistency of attribute values.

Topological requirements include the following: lines must begin and end at nodes, lines must connect to each other at nodes, lines do not extend through nodes, left and right areas are defined for each line element and are consistent throughout the file, and lines representing the limits of the file (neatline) are free of gaps.

The completeness of the data is unknown but should be consistent with the level of information normally shown on U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale topographic maps.
